The Ruth Elizabeth Loving Davis Fund

Ruth Davis (or "Ruthie" as she was called by many of her friends) was born Ruth Loving to Portuguese and Cape Verdean immigrants on June 24, 1952. Raised in a Christian-faith-centered home in Dorchester, Massachusetts, the largest neighborhood in the city of Boston, Ruthie was the youngest of two girls. Surrounded by family and friends, her childhood was filled with lots of love and laughter. Ruthie's parents, Jackson and Ann Loving, placed a premium on education, making it no surprise that Ruthie and her older sister, Natalie, both grew up to become educators.
Upon completing her undergraduate education from Barrington College in Rhode Island and obtaining her Teaching Certification from the City of Boston, Ruthie began her storied, 38-year career as a Boston Public School (BPS) teacher. For Ruthie, teaching was far more than a job - it was a calling. She was incredibly dedicated to her craft. In fact, her children can recall countless summers when their mother would purchase materials for her classroom to ensure that her students could fully participate in learning activities. It was only after they became adults that her children realized this was not necessarily normal behavior, as schools are typically supposed to provide those materials. However, rather than rely on the school, Ruthie would spend her own money on her students' needs. For her, this was a small sacrifice; it was what it meant to serve the young minds of her community. Additionally, to ensure that her students got the absolute best of her, she went back to school later in life to get her Master's Degree in Elementary Education. She accomplished this feat while working full-time and raising her two young boys. As a devoted educator, up until the day she passed away, she understood the importance of education, placing particular value on continuing education and professional development.
Like Ruthie, the Legacy of Excellence Foundation places a premium on quality education and the impact that learning can have on the lives of young people. Therefore, to honor the legacy and memory of Ruth Elizabeth Loving Davis, Legacy of Excellence Foundation has established this fund in her name for both educators and youth scholars.
